The museum is located in the building where Snellman lived during his years in Kuopio between 1845 and 1849. The building is a typical middle 19th century house.

Johan Vilhelm Snellman (1806 - 1881) philosopher and statesman, was engaged as a grammar school headmaster in Kuopio 1843 - 1849. His newspaper called "Saima" had a fundamental role in generating public awareness of the Finnish language as a national asset.

The museum has been decorated with objects that belonged to Snellman.
